John Romanos Coming Home to Television A Review
John Romano writes about the transition from erudite academic writing to writing for the masses in popular television in Coming Home to Television. The essay addresses the differences between what is considered highbrow versus what is considered lowbrow art and creative expression, especially in the realm of literature. Ironically, Romano writes about television from a scholarly perspective. He is only somewhat sarcastic when Romano notes that the transition from academia to television script writing was a step down. Walter Karp does not address the differences between writing for school and writing for television. However, Karp does harp on the inefficiencies of the American public school system. Karp focuses more on class issues related to education, such as unequal access to gifted education between lower-income versus higher-income families. Karp also incorporates issues related to educational tracking in his essay, Why Johnny Cant Think. What the two articles have in common is t he way the authors expose the divide between highbrow and lowbrow culture in America, although they address these matters from completely different perspectives and points of view. Both writing for academic audiences and for television audiences requires mastery of certain jargon, style, technique, and approach. For example, writing for television requires understanding of what audiences want. Romano needs to know what his audiences like, and needs to write so that the viewer keeps coming

Jekyll And Hyde Character Analysis - 968 Words
Robert Louis Stevensonââ¬â¢s novel, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, explores the duality of human nature. He writes this novel to show us that humans have split personalities, and that there are two sides to humanââ¬â¢s personality: good and evil. In the late-Victorian literature, duality appears to be a common theme; serving as a way for modern readers to analyze late-Victorian literature and culture. Stevenson weaves throughout the novel a theme of duality + which appears in the characters of both Jekyll and Hyde as well as in Stevensonââ¬â¢s characterization of London itself. First, it is obvious that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an example of duality in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The streets that are walked by Utterson and Enfield are described to be ââ¬Ëquietââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëemptyââ¬â¢ which gives a sense of monotony, and dread. However, in the next few lines the streets are now busy with activity out of nowhere. As we can see, when these two ideas are compared next to each other, it creates tension within our minds as we are confused as to what is happening. However, the core principle remains the same, that even the very streets are described to be dual in their appearances. The description of Jekylls house is another example; it is described to have a great ââ¬Ëair or wealthââ¬â¢ and the insides are described to be very ââ¬Ërespectableââ¬â¢. This portrays Jekyll in a way, as he too is regarded to be respectable. However, there seems to be this hidden connection into a sinister block that lacks any window, and is described to be under serviced and ââ¬Ëneglectedââ¬â¢ as though it is some sort of person with feelings who will mind being ignored. However, the key point is that, as unlikely as it may seem, these two houses in fact share an inner connection, much like Jekyll and Hyde. Once again, there is a dual nature at play, which is in fact a prelude to the core theme in the book. The setting plays a major role in delivering this thoughts. Contributions of Prominent Women in Islam Context The role of women in Islam has evolved over time. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as well as the era that shortly followed the Prophetââ¬â¢s death, women were given a great sense of power, freedom, and rights. However, because the Quran and hadith are open to many different interpretations, a male-dominated society began to slowly restrict the rights of women and slowly began to push their roles towards staying within the household and being protected by being secluded. This is evident in societies today such as Saudi Arabia. However, over history, as well as in modern times, numerous women have overcome these obstacles and made a clear difference in society.
